Today’s energy, economic and environmental challenges—combined with the fact that buildings consume nearly 40 percent of the nation’s energy—make energy codes a central part of a sustainable future. Energy codes and standards set minimum requirements for energy-efficient design and construction for new and renovated buildings that impact energy use and emissions for the life of the building. Join Dave Ruffcorn for a look at Iowa’s Building Energy Codes – how Iowa stacks up nationally, pending code changes, compliance issues, resources you can use and more.

1:30 p.m. – 2:15p.m. | Utility Scale Wind
Interconnection to the transmission grid is one of the most challenging aspects of renewable energy development. When prospecting for new sites, a good wind resource is the prerequisite, but just as importantly, we’re asking: can I get a connection to the grid here (at a cost that doesn’t kill the project)? For independent power producers, getting the product (energy) to market is a significant portion of project costs and, all too frequently, a barrier to the growth of renewable energy. This course will give an overview of how wind and solar fit in today’s electricity markets, the complex grid interconnection process, the effects of transmission constraints on renewable energy, and the work that’s underway to relieve some of these constraints.

1:30 p.m. – 2:15p.m. | Building Envelope and its Influence on Building Performance
This session will cover some common building envelope concerns with design and construction of several types of buildings. We explore these as possible causes of high utility costs, poor indoor air quality, excessive condensation, and premature degradation of buildings.
This session will also discuss the importance that an “Owners Project Requirements” and “Basis of Design” documents can have on the design of new facilities or renovation of existing structures.
Investigative tools include; thermal imaging, door fans, spray racks, smoke tracer pencils, neutral buoyancy smoke, pressure recorders, ambient condition trend logging and mechanical systems evaluation.
Together these tools and processes can shed light on possible building issues and reinforce other findings within a building study. The results of building envelope studies provide compelling evidence of how short-circuited (leaky) building envelopes, fresh air intake rates and properly sized mechanical systems can impact building conditions and life cycle costs.
