CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – (April 29, 2026) – Van Meter, a Midwest-based, employee-owned electrical and automation distributor, today celebrated the groundbreaking of a major expansion and automation project at its Cottage Grove, MN, regional distribution center. The multiyear investment strengthens Van Meter’s operational foundation and supports the company’s long-term growth strategy—while maintaining uninterrupted service for customers throughout construction.

Van Meter currently employs approximately 205 people at its Cottage Grove facility, which plays a critical role in serving customers across the region.
The project will expand the Cottage Grove facility by 124,000 square feet, increasing the overall footprint to 315,000 square feet. In addition to the physical expansion, Van Meter will implement Hai Robotics automation, allowing it to scale its distribution operations intelligently and efficiently.
“This expansion is about building capacity with purpose,” said Nate Jensema, Chief Operating Officer at Van Meter. “By combining additional space with intelligent automation, we’re creating a more efficient, scalable operation that supports our customers today while preparing us for what’s next. Just as importantly, we’re doing this in a way that maintains service continuity and enhances the daily experience for our employee-owners.”
Van Meter currently has two locations in Cottage Grove – one at 7450 95th Street South and the other at 7601 100th Street South. The expansion at 95th Street will allow Van Meter to consolidate its inventory management, order fulfillment and wire and cable processing operations under one roof, driving cultural alignment, reducing long-term operating costs, and improving service levels. The investment is strategic and designed to ensure longterm reliability, sustainability, and overall operational excellence.
“This project represents a significant milestone for Van Meter and our confidence in the future,” said Lura McBride, President and Chief Executive Officer. “As an employee-owned company, we think in generations, not quarters. This investment reflects our commitment to our people, our customers, and the communities we serve—ensuring we’re well positioned to grow responsibly and deliver exceptional value for decades to come.”
Ryan Companies will serve as general contractor for the project. Construction and automation implementation will continue through 2027, with a full operational transition completed in 2028. “Our top priorities for this project are ensuring the safety of everyone working on site and maintaining uninterrupted service for our customers,” said Nate Jensema, Chief Operating Oficer at Van Meter.
Van Meter also acknowledged the critical support that helped make the project possible, including partnership with the City of Cottage Grove, the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, and the State of Minnesota.
The Cottage Grove expansion is a key component of Van Meter’s broader 2030 growth trajectory, reinforcing the company’s ability to scale, adapt, and lead in an evolving marketplace.
