Don't Get Fooled, Secure Your Tools: Three Ways to Avoid Job Site Theft

jobsite theft and safety

Job site theft costs the industry more than $1 billion in tools and equipment annually. Job sites contain tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of materials. Would you notice if things went missing? Where do you keep your tools when nobody is on the job site? Here are three ways to secure your job site and keep your inventory safe.

1. DETER TRESPASSERS WITH SUFFICIENT LIGHTING

Keeping your job site well-lit makes it safer for people navigating the job site at night and improves security by deterring would-be trespassers and thieves. Do you have security cameras? You should. Using temporary lighting solutions like string lights, wobble lights or portable work lights make it easier to see security camera footage. Some cities limit the amount of light output you are allowed, but you should provide as much light as possible within local regulations.

2. LOCK THINGS UP IN CLAM SHELLS

Not to sound like your mother, but make sure tools and equipment are picked up and put away somewhere safe. Clam shells are a simple yet effective way to safely store essential items and keep inventory close by on your job site. A clam shell is a big, lockable box that folds open and shut. It is on wheels, so you can easily move it around the job site. Unless your burglar has a key to the clam shell, they will not be able to walk off with expensive tools and equipment. In addition to equipment storage, you can partner with Van Meter to make sure your clam shell has sufficient inventory of essential supplies like personal protective equipment (PPE). If Van Meter stocks supplies for you, our product line specialists can come to your job site and make sure your inventory is sufficient and replenished.

3. TRACK YOUR INVENTORY WITH STOREROOM LOGIX

Clam shells are great for keeping items secure, but how do you keep track of your inventory levels and who has taken certain items? If someone with access to the clam shell started taking items one or two at a time, would you notice? How would you know which person did it? Storeroom Logix is a hardware and software solution that allows accountability and track-ability for products. You can keep things in a vending machine, locker, drawer or storeroom that is tracked by radio-frequency identification (RFID). If you are missing an item, you can see who checked it out via RFID. Storeroom Logix vending machines can be equipped with a camera, so you can also check surveillance if equipment goes missing.

In addition to providing inventory storage and tracking, Storeroom Logix monitors and maintains inventory levels. Are you running low on gloves? Storeroom Logix can see that you are at your minimum level of gloves and replenish them to a pre-determined maximum level. If you start running out of inventory faster than you should and suspect someone of stealing inventory, you can easily track who has been checking items out.
