How to Set Up The Maxis 6K Cable Puller For An Overhead Wire Pull

Learn how one person can set up an overhead wire pull in minutes

If you are looking for a versatile wire tugger that can handle most of your wire pulls, look no further than the Maxis 6K cable puller. In addition to saving time and effort pulling wire, the 6K can be set up by one person in less than two minutes. Watch Adam Bayliss, contractor services specialist, show you how to set up the Maxis 6K cable puller for an overhead wire pull, or follow our step-by-step guide below.

STEP #1: FIND YOUR CONDUIT ADAPTER

The Maxis 6K cable puller comes with five conduit adapters ranging from 2” to 4”. Each adapter comes with a conduit sleeve. We recommend removing the sleeve from the adapter because it can create a pinch point inside your pipe and jam your wire pull. You can remove the sleeve and still safely use the conduit adapter.

STEP #2: REMOVE AND PREPARE THE UPPER ARM

Start by removing the upper arm from your cart and unfolding it to lay it flat on the ground. Your conduit adapter will slide into the top of it, and you can secure it by hand with the 5/8” bolt included with your wire puller.

STEP #3: INSERT YOUR PIN (LEAVING A BEND IN THE ARM!)

Next, you will want to insert your pin to lock the arm in place. It is important to leave a slight bend in the arm. That makes sure the pulling rope will always stay in contact with the rollers, as you never want to bypass the center roller.

STEP #4: EXTEND THE ARM TO YOUR DESIRED LENGTH

The center section of the arm between your center roller and the motor and gearbox will extend out. Just remove the pin holding it in place and slide it out to the length you need. Once you have the arm resecured with the pin, it’s time to attach it to your motor and gearbox.

STEP #5: ADD YOUR MOTOR AND GEARBOX

To attach the motor and gearbox, grab it off the cart and lay it on the floor next to your arm. The upper arm will slide onto the gearbox, and you can pin it into place to secure it. You have now assembled your tugger, and you are ready to set it upright.

STEP #6: SET YOUR WIRE TUGGER IN PLACE

Stand the wire puller upright and make sure the conduit adapter fits snugly against the coupling on your conduit. The tugger should now be securely in place, and you don’t even need to use anchors.

STEP #7: SECURE YOUR WIRE PULLING ROPE

Make sure your pull rope is touching both the first and second roller. This is where the slight bend in your arm will make sure the pull rope stays in contact with the center roller. Pull it straight down to the capstan, and wrap the pull rope around two or three times to start.

STEP #8: PULL YOUR WIRE

You are now ready to begin your wire pull. It is important to note that Southwire’s vertical capstan makes it possible to stand off to the side when operating the wire puller. It keeps you out of harm’s way because if something does go wrong, you’re not in the line of fire.
