Drive out the Darkness: Secure Your Business with Commercial Security Lighting

outdoor lighting

Nobody likes being kept in the dark—figuratively or literally. When it comes to our businesses, having the proper outdoor lighting setup is a great way to avoid being left in the dark and, more importantly, keep our facilities safe and secure. To help your business improve its security, let us shed some light on the reasons you should consider LED commercial security lighting.

1. LED is the Best of Both Worlds

Having sufficient outdoor lighting provides safety and security for businesses in two main ways: 1) It makes it safer for pedestrian traffic and people working outside at night and 2) It improves security by deterring trespassers from breaking in and makes it easier to see security camera footage. With the short lifespan of High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and the low brightness of High-Pressure Sodium (HPS), what is the best way to light up your area?

Switching to LED can increase light output by 40 percent because you can easily control the color, lumen output and direction of the light. Because they are efficient, it does not take long to see your return on investment (ROI) for installing LED lighting. In addition to saving on energy costs, using LED lighting saves time and money on maintenance and repairs. HID fixtures require you to maintain lamps and ballasts. With the standard five-year warranty of LED, you essentially have five years with no maintenance costs. Even after the initial five years, there is a significantly longer lifespan and much less maintenance than HID lighting.

2. You will Avoid Hassle and Downtime

Do you know where to find replacement parts if one of your lights fails? There are no standards for labeling LED drivers, so it is important to use products from reputable companies (e.g. Cooper, Signify, etc.). In addition, it is important to weigh up-front costs and the safety and security risks of not having a ready replacement. If you order a cheap light fixture that came from overseas and the driver fails after a few years, you may not be able to find a replacement. However, if we know the manufacturer, Van Meter can help you avoid downtime and easily find replacement parts. LED drivers are interchangeable in the field, which will save you from downtime and the cost of a replacement fixture.

3. Designed specifically for you (and your facility)

If you are mounting a wallpack at 15 feet high, what kind of lumen output do you need to go 30 feet out from the building? Will your flood lights cause too much light pollution to be Dark Sky compliant? Will your site lighting placement allow you to see security camera footage? Let our Lighting Specialists answer these questions for you

With Van Meter’s lighting design services, we can load an image or drawing of a facility into our software and strategically place lighting to find the most efficient setup. It is easier to control the distribution of light with LED, so we can better determine what distribution type is best for a particular area.
