How to Set Up The Maxis XD10 Extreme Duty Cable Puller

Learn how one person can set up a heavy-duty overhead wire pull in minutes

Do you have a wire puller that can keep up with your largest wire pulls? With a 10,000 pound peak pulling force and continuous pulling rating of 7,000 pounds, the Maxis XD10 Extreme Duty Cable Puller is built to handle your most extreme wire pulls without slowing down. Watch Adam Bayliss, contractor services specialist, demonstrate how to set up the XD10 for an overhead wire pull, or follow our step-by-step guide below.

STEP #1: EXTEND THE CENTER SECTION OF THE WIRE PULLER

When pulling from overhead, the center section of the XD10 has to be extended out. First, you will want to remove the pin anchoring the section in place. Once you remove the pin, use the hand crank to lower the side with the center roller. Gravity is your friend, and it just makes it easier to slide apart.

Once it is lowered, you will go around to the other side and pull the pop pin to slide the tugger apart. After it’s extended out to the length you need, you can reinstall the pin you removed at the start to lock it in place. Then use the hand crank to bring the wire tugger level again.

STEP #2: ATTACH THE CONDUIT ADAPTER

Like the Maxis 6K cable puller, the XD10 tugger comes with five conduit adapters ranging from 2” to 4”. Attaching it is easy. On the end of the arm, pull the pop pin, slide the conduit adapter onto the end and release the pin to lock it in place.

STEP #3: RAISE ARM AND SET THE WIRE TUGGER IN PLACE

You can lift up the arm up and lock it in place at an appropriate angle with the pin around the larger, center roller. Then, roll the XD10 into place and, using the elevation control crank, raise the arm up to your conduit. You will want to make sure your conduit adapter fits snugly onto the connector.

STEP #4: SET UP YOUR WIRE PULLING ROPE

It is important to make sure your pull rope comes in contact with both of your rollers on the wire tugger. Pull the rope down under the top roller, under the center roller and back up through the body of the tugger before wrapping it around the capstan a few times. Your cable puller is now set up to begin your overhead pull.

STEP #5: START YOUR WIRE PULL

Before you begin, it’s important to note that since the tugger and capstan are vertical, you can stand off to the side when operating the cable puller. That way if there is a complication in your wire pull, you are safely out of the line of fire.

You should now be ready for a successful wire pull. If you have any questions about the Maxis XD10 Extreme Duty Cable Puller or any other Southwire cable pullers, please reach out to me or your Van Meter sales representative.
